Publicity hound and bonafide, certified loser Richard Heene is trying very hard to keep the press coverage hot. In an effort to milk every bit of publicity he can from his son’s fake runaway balloon ride, he promised a “big announcement” at a scheduled press conference outside his home this morning. When Heene came out to make the big announcement, he placed a small box on his porch, and asked the media to place written questions in the box. He said he would come out later tonight and answer the written questions.
Richard Heene is a scumbag. Much like the runaway balloon story, this tactic is nothing more than a ploy to fan the flames of media coverage. The longer he teases and plays with the media, without giving them anything of substance, the longer he can stay on the front page. As if the runaway balloon fraud wasn’t enough, he’s still trying to get publicity for himself in the aftermath.
As I previously posted, Falcon Heene said they “did it for a show.” As soon as the child said that, America’s Biggest Loser claimed not to know what the kid was talking about. Well low and behold, I think Heene did know what Falcon was talking about. As reported by The Denver Post:
Friday, RDF Media — the company that produces the reality-television program “Wife Swap,” on which the Heene family, from Fort Collins, was twice featured — confirmed it had been working with the family on a show of their own.
“At one point in time, we had a show in development with the Heenes,” RDF Media spokeswoman Brooke Fisher wrote in an e-mail. “We are no longer in active development with the family.”
Fisher did not respond to follow-up questions about how long ago the company had worked with the Heenes and why it stopped.
Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the cable channel TLC — which is known for the reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8” — said the Heenes pitched an idea for a reality program to the channel.
“They did approach us months ago to do a show, and we passed,” TLC spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said.
So Heene was turned down twice for TV shows he pitched. Then, suddenly, we have this farce with balloon boy. That ain’t no coincidence.
Richard Heene continues to expose himself for the despicable human being he is, exploiting a child to satisfy his thirst for unjustified fame. His continued antics make me wonder: Is Richard Heene trying to get indicted for false reporting? Every time he pulls a stunt like this, it’s like begging the police to come after him. In fact, Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden said that his investigators plan to “re-interview” the family. Judging from this guy’s behavior thus far, he might be attempting to get charged with a crime just to keep the publicity going. If that’s not his goal, then he is behaving rather stupidly, and needs some advice from a criminal defense lawyer.
Richard Heene could end up getting a lesson on a basic tenant of criminal law: The only thing worse than lying to the police, is intentionally antagonizing them. Chris Rock once summarized this legal principle as follows: “Playing ‘F–k Tha Police’, while you’re getting pulled over by the police, is just ignorant.” I couldn’t have put it any better myself.
